Here is a brief concise history of !Guardian.
Versions :
==========
< 1.03 : Experimental (working) pre-release versions
1.03 : First full-feature 'release' version
1.04 : Wimp_Slot checking amended so as not to obscure a new task
starting.
The 'Extend' virus is automatically Zapped, if found in
memory when !Guardian loads, with no need for user intervention.
Note that this means no modules with the name 'Extend' will be
allowed to survive when !Guardian is loaded.
1.05 : Code added to reset machine if 'Extend' virus is detected.
Small bug fix in !boot file disc search, where the line is
printed out. Previous versions could backstep past the
beginning of the file. This is now fixed.
Please note, that the Extend virus doesn't appear to be that
harmful, in that it doesn't delete anything, just adding 1k
to the RMA space. If left un-checked, this will eventually
give a memory full error, this crashing your machine, as RMA
space is non-recoverable.
At the moment, if you 'Zap' a suspect !Boot file, it will be
physically deleted. Whilst useful for destroying the virus,
it is not useful if your program requires it's !Boot file.
I am currently working on this and will release a new version
soon, that just deletes the naughty lines and adds a CHR$&FF
to the end of the file (Extend will then think it has already
been affected and then leave it alone in future). Please
contact my BBS for up to date information of the progress of
!Guardian.
1.06 Small bug fixes carried out.
1.07
1.08 Amended to recognise and destroy 'Net Manager' virus.
1.09 Small minor bug fixes
2.10 (29th January 1992)
Amended to work on additional filing systems, eg. ADFS, SCSI,
IDEFS, NETFS and CDFS
Self-checking code added to prevent !Guardian itself being
infected by viruses.
Main window slightly enlarged and icons made clearer to read.
Additional 'Directory check' feature added. You can now check
individual directories by dragging onto the main window.
Amended to detect Archimedes World Module virus and ArchieVirus.
!Guardian will now also restore modules corrupted by the AW virus
2.11 (31st January 1992, 3.01am)
Additional tidying up to remove some confusing wimp messages
given by RISC OS 3
Checking for files innoculated against the ArchieVirus
When multiple wimp messages occur, the one that causes the 'beep'
remains in the status window. Previous versions sometimes got
overwritten.
WimpSlot set to 96k to avoid memory problems when running on
1 and 2Mbyte machines.
Hourglass updated to give percentage of disc scan so far.
2.12 (18th February 1992, 10.33am)
Running commentary tidied up so that messages aren't too long
for the icons.
Program doesn't stop when a file innoculated against ArchieVirus
is discovered. It only stops if file is affected.
Hopefully(?) modified code to detect SCSI drives.
Icons in main window slightly changed.
2.13 (5th March 1992, 4.09pm)
Checking for Extend virus innoculation slightly modified to
improve for innoculated files.
2.13a Minor changes (nothing important!)
2.14 (10th June 1992, 1.55pm)
Code amended using an A540 so that SCSI and CDFS checking now
definitely works. IDEFS should work ok, but is not tested.
Hourglass percentage update bug fixed.
2.15 Various alterations carried out, with bug fixes in SCSI code.
2.16 (7th September, 11.59pm)
New 'title page' window added to give additional credits and
boost my ego.
Hourglass amended so that it doesn't disappear after a warning
is given.
Main window colours changed so that 2 colour modes don't change
to black.
Sound option provided on main menu for ease of use in classroom
situation.
Econet compatibility added.
2.17 (8th September 1992)
Network compatibility bugs fixed.
2.18 (9th September 1992)
Some messages tidied up for ease of use.
Filer Action Window opening on RISC OS3 does not cause !Guardian
to bleep.
3.00 (16th September 1992) *** MAJOR UPDATE ***
The whole program has been re-vamped to include a number of
new features;
* Separate windows for drive and wimp status.
* Automatic scanning and zapping of viruses in startup - This is
handy for Network users who wish to automatically scan a given
directory each time they boot up the system.
* Menu selection of filing system and drive.
* Save options provided to allow you to save 'as default' your
favourite menu options.
* A number of minor bugs fixed.
* An 'Auto Zap' option has been added to the Disc Scan menu. -
This allows you to automatically zap viruses from a
disc with no user intervention. This can be handy for novice
users who may not understand the 'Looks Suspicious' messages.
3.01 Various small bug fixes.
3.02 " " " "
3.03 (25th September 1992)
Menu options tidied up a bit so that Auto Scan menu looks better.
Deleted ABCLib from !Guardian so that it's can't get corrupted -
It should now be located inside your !System.modules directory.
!Guardian now dismounts the disc correctly, allowing for many
discs with the same name to be scanned. ie. class-sets.
3.04 (28th September 1992)
Extra menu option added - Auto Watch. This is for those people
who find the Wimp Watcher window opening each time a new app
starts, irritating. You can save this as a default option, but
remember that it is sometimes handy to know when something has
loaded. In fact this is a major feature of !Guardian
3.05 (28th September 1992) - well I said it was under constant
development.
Bug on file dragging fixed so that it doesn't dismount a disc
if a file or directory is dragged to !Guardian.
A number of minor bug fixes were also carried out.
3.06 (1st October 1992)
'Find File' option added. You can now get !Guardian to search
a disc for any required file that you may have lost. A 'fuzzy
search' option allows you to look for the exact file typed in
(toggled on), or for any file containing the letters typed in
(toggled off).
3.07 (6th October 1992, 8.16pm)
'Set Type' option added to Disc Utils menu. Allows you to set
file types by dragging a file into the filetype window. By
holding shift down and dragging the file, you can read it's
current filetype.
3.08 (8th October 1992, 11.46pm)
Minor bug fixes relating to 'drag file' routine.
Priority of virus scanning now changed so that 'Looks Suspicious'
is the least likely verdict to be made.
3.09 (14th October 1992, 9.52pm)
Extra menu added to the Set Type window to allow you to select
any filetype from a menu - handy if you can't remember it's name.
3.12 (23rd November 1992)
Bug Fix: Broken directories are merely skipped over and no longer
abort disc scans.
Bug Fix: Dragging files now works in the 'Find File' window.
Short keypresses added: By holding down a selected key and
clicking 'select' on the !Guardian icon you can open windows
without going through the menus.
S=start Scan
F=open Find file window
T=open fileType window
3.14 (9th Dec 1992)
Virus checking in RMA (and on startup) added. !Guardian will
now scan memory on startup (if required) for any module viruses.
3.14b (15th Dec 1992)
Support added to scan RAM discs.
3.14f (17th Dec 1992)
Improved inoculation of the 'icon' virus, which is now dealt
with with 'Auto Zap' on.
"Blinking eyes" added to !Guardian icon.
3.15 (18th Dec 1992)
Support given for Risc OS3 interactive help - message file added.
3.15b (19th Dec 1992)
Fixed slight bug where Start/Abort scan menu option is not
updated correctly.
3.17 (21st Jan 1993)
Bug fix in Disc Find routine where, when completed, it didn't
update the menu to re-say 'Start Scan'.
3.17b (26th Jan 1993)
Bug fix where hourglass occasionally gets turned off during a
virus scan.
Menu update routine speeded up.
3.17d (3rd Feb 1993)
Drive scans now works when 'Autoscan' is on - slight bug fix.
Icon virus detected tidied up slightly.
3.17e (4th Feb 1993)
Auto Scan Floppies option implemented. When this option is on,
clicking on the drive 0 icon will automatically scan any disc
in the drive, before allowing the filer window to open.
N.B. THIS ONLY APPEARS TO WORK CORRECTLY ON RISC OS 3
3.20 (7th Feb 1993)
Now updated to be identical to !Guardian PRO as far as virus
scanning goes, but minus the disc utilities such as Backup and
Disc Edit etc etc.
3.21 (24th Feb 1993)
a) Autoscan bug fixed so that it now works ok.
b) VIRUS FOUND message removed from files that are only
suspicious looking.
c) Self-checking on sprite file added.
